HELPING KIDS TRANSITION THROUGH A MOVE

Moving is a stressful time for anyone, but especially for the kids. Moving usually means changing schools, leaving friends and sometimes family, which is a hard thing for kids to understand and accept.

Just the thought of moving is hard, then comes all the stress of packing, trying to live amongst the boxes and chaos, then loading up the moving truck and heading to parts unknown. New schools, new neighbors, new parks, restaurants, and stores are just a few things to try to figure out when you get settled in your new home, and for kids, it's not an easy thing to adjust to. Then comes the first night trying to get to sleep and then waking up in an unfamiliar place. All of these things can cause irritability and crankiness – something that is not easy for parents to adjust to either.

Luxury Lake Home would like to offer some tips to make the transition a little easier for the whole family.

 BREAKING THE NEWS:

When the decision has been made to make a move, it is best to sit down with the whole family to discuss the situation. Share your thoughts and feelings as parents, and why the move is a necessary one. Let your kids feel free to share their feelings as well, and let them know it's okay to be angry, scared, and upset but that as a family, you will face all these emotions together. Let them know that moving to a new home can be exciting and fun, and an adventure that you can all experience together.

GET THEM INVOLVED:

Packing can be daunting, but it can also be an interesting event to do as a family. Going through your belongings, saying goodbye to some, and deciding what to take to the new place can be fun. Take pictures of the home you are leaving and the favorite things in the area to take with you when you move. Invite friends over for a going away party and share special memories that you have made. Exchange information to keep in touch and, if possible, make a plan to invite them to your new home when you get settled.

 VISIT YOUR NEW AREA:

Before the move, take a drive around the neighborhood where your new home is located. Take them by their new school, and surrounding parks and playgrounds so they can see what adventures will be waiting for them when they arrive.

SETTING UP HOUSE:

When you have arrived at your new home, let the kids participate in unpacking, organizing, and decorating. Let them pick the colors and theme for their new room, and even help with placing the furniture so they feel like they are involved in creating this new family space.

 WELCOME HOME;

When you are finally settled in, enjoy a Welcome Home party. Order takeout from a local restaurant and celebrate the exciting things you plan to do and explore in your new home and neighborhood.

Keep the lines of communication open, and your schedules as close to normal as possible, and before you know it your new home will be a cheerful home!
