Questions to Ask When Interviewing a Home Stager

When you’re selling a luxury home at the Lake of the Ozarks, staging is going to be one of the first things that you’ll start preparing for. The first step is, of course, going to be hiring a luxury real estate agent, but after that, you’ll want to start getting your home prepared for going on the market. Having incredible photos, especially of a luxury home, is going to be incredibly important, because many buyers are going to be primarily shopping from a distance, at least at first. You want your lakefront home at the Lake of the Ozarks to portray exactly what it needs to tug at a buyers attention. Because of this, staging can play a HUGE role in the sale of a luxury property.

If your home is either vacant or styled out of date, it’s going to be invaluable to hire someone who can update the look of at least the main rooms and a few bedrooms/bathrooms. Here are a few questions you will want to ask your luxury designer as you move forward.

Q: What techniques do you use to keep up with design trends

An experienced stager is going to have really good sources for not just how they design a space, but also for how they secure the pieces. Do they stay up to date through conferences? Are they regularly looking at new listings that are selling quickly?

Q: What training have you received to be a home stager?

To have a great eye for interior design, someone certainly doesn’t have to have formal training. However, being accredited by an association like the Real Estate Staging Association means that the brand you are hiring is held to a specific standard. They would have to pass an ethics exam, have a home staging business insurance, and also have been in business for at least one year.

Q: What is a typical price range of the homes that you stage?

You will find value in hiring a stager who has staged and in turn sold homes that are the same size and quality of your own. For example, if you are selling a luxury lakefront home at the Lake of the Ozarks, you don’t want to hire a stager whose experience has been primarily in starter homes.

Q: How many average days were your staged homes on the market last year?

This can be a really important question. Clearly, the way a home is staged isn’t the sole factor on how long it’s been on the market, but if a stager’s average is continually on the high end, you will have been given helpful information. An experienced stager is important, but finding one who is successful is key.

Q: Can I see photos from your three most recently staged homes?

Finally, asking to see a stager’s portfolio may not always be the best way to get an idea about the work that they do. It’s going to be finely curated with only the best and biggest homes, and they could have been staged a while ago as well. Asking to see their three most recently staged homes is a better way to get an accurate idea of the quality of their work.
